BEGINNER FITNESS PROGRAM
A typical fitness program for someone who has not been exercising and is interested in fitness and/ or weight loss.
The personal training program generally starts with multi-joint exercises in order to prepare the muscle for later exercise workouts. Multi joint exercises are exercises that involve more than one joint. Some examples of compound joint exercises are leg press, bench, upright press. The compound exercises inform the personal trainer of the client’s muscle strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. The large muscle group exercises also inform the personal trainer of muscle imbalances, which must be corrected throughout the fitness program. The duration of these compound muscle exercises can range from one or two exercises to one or two weeks, depending on the fitness of the personal training client and if there are any muscular imbalances that should be corrected. Any muscle imbalance will impede the progress of any personal training program and may even be a cause for an injury. Most injuries are from joint imbalances due to one side of a joint being stronger than the other. This creates a general discomfort or awkwardness that a person actually may get accustomed to and forget about it. Then when the individual is performing a routine task, something gives in, and they feel the injury either then or 24 to 48 hours later. Many joint problems are not felt for one or two days, which may make it difficult to ascertain the original cause of the injury. Very often I hear from people that they were doing something they do on a regular basis i.e. picking up grocery bags or luggage which they have done in the past many times yet this time they feel a sharp pain. This is usually caused by a tight muscle or tendon and the tightness is caused by the muscle imbalance around a particular joint.
The second part of the personal training program then changes with respect to what was learned from the compound exercise training, the individual’s unique body and their particular fitness goals. what usually happens is the exercises change from the compound exercises to single joint exercises and more advanced exercise routines.
